Well, it seems that Microsoft decided to kill this year’s PDC. It was supposed to happen early in October in LA, but now it’s “in the process of rescheduling”.
The PDC is usually about new technology that is coming in the next one or two years and is going to have big impact on Windows development. The last one was in 2005 and at the time Visual Studio 2005, .NET 2.0, SQL Server 2005 and BizTalk 2006 were all just about to be released and there was a big focus on what was called WinFx and eventually was renamed to .NET 3.0. Technologies like Avalon (WPF) and Indigo (WCF) stole a lot of the sessions and Microsoft also announced officially for the first time the Workflow Foundation. It was a big event with lots of good stuff.
Since Microsoft first announced that they would have a PDC this year I thought it was going to be a bit dry. .NET 3.5 and Visual Studio “Orcas” should be very close to release anyway and there isn’t enough beta products to demonstrate. I think it makes more sense to reschedule it to perhaps 2008 or until they have enough stuff about .NET 4.0 and Visual Studio “Rosario” to talk about and demonstrate.
Well, it all means that I won’t be going to sunny LA this year… Hum… TechEd Europe it may be then… :-)
